Ready, Set, Hike! Life Lessons from the Football Field
Washington Redskins Player, Darrel Young, visits students at PHILLIPS School ~ Annandale
(Annandale, VA) On Tuesday, January 15, students at PHILLIPS School ~ Annandale got a special visit from Darrel Young, #36 of the Washington Redskins. Young spent the day at PHILLIPS talking with the students about his journey to success and the importance of a healthy lifestyle. PHILLIPS students welcomed Young with a school assembly, which gave Young the opportunity to talk about his journey to the NFL and answer questions from the student body. Then Young led a fitness activity and showed students various football drills and talked about the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Young also met with the senior class at PHILLIPS and spoke about the challenges of transitioning after high school and how students can reach their dreams through hard work and dedication. Young finished his time at PHILLIPS with special visits to classrooms and signing autographs for students.
“The students were surprised and excited to have a professional athlete standing in our gym answering their questions,” said Scott Phillips, PHILLIPS Physical Education Coach. Phillips worked alongside Young, teaching the football drills and stated that, “Darrel was a class act and left a positive impression on our students about working hard and following their dreams. Most students only see athletes on TV or while playing video games- it was special to have Darrel here for a day.”
Young had the opportunity to meet several of PHILLIPS’ students and certainly left a lasting impression for each student. One student reflected on meeting Young stating, “Darrel taught us to never give up on your dreams. It really meant something special to meet a professional athlete.” Another student commented that Young told them “to never give up on your dreams no matter how hard it is. It was great to learn about his life experiences and that he was a hard worker from when he was young until now.” This was an exciting opportunity for our students and a memory that will not soon forget.
The Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation, the non-profit philanthropic arm of the team founded by owner Daniel M. Snyder, supported Young’s visit to PHILLIPS School ~ Annandale by donating Redskins Read Activity Books, team posters, NFL Play 60 door hangers and Redskins Eye Black to students.
