Annandale Residents Nominated for Volunteer Service Awards

One hundred and sixty-two individuals and groups are nominated and nine of those are from Annandale

Several Annandale residents have been nominated for a Fairfax County Volunteer Service Award and will be honored by Volunteer Fairfax and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors at the 9th annual Fairfax County Volunteer Service Awards, Thursday, Apr. 14, at the Waterford at Springfield in Springfield.

“The Fairfax County Volunteer Service Awards provide an opportunity to recognize those that are bridging the gap between communities and societies through volunteering,” said Jeanne Sanders, executive director of Volunteer Fairfax in a press release. “These outstanding members of our local community are truly Agents of Change, Ambassadors of Giving and are ultimately making an impact that extends Fairfax County.”

Nine out of the 162 people nominated are Annandale residents:

  • Debbie Heitzer volunteered at Food for Others, and is nominated for the Adult Volunteer 250 and Over and Benchmark 250 awards.
  • Westminster Builder's Club is nominated for the Youth Volunteer Group award.
  • Jenna Truong volunteered at Audrey Moore RECenter, and is nominated for the Youth Volunteer and Youth Benchmark 100 awards.
  • Karen Ralph volunteered at FACETS, and is nominated for the Benchmark 250 award.
  • Keith Peyton volunteered at Fairfax County Park Authority, and is nominated for the Senior Volunteer and Benchmark 250 awards.

This article fails to mention that the 400+ volunteers who support the many ministries of the Annandale Christian Community for Action (ACCA) also have been nominated for the Volunteer Fairfax Award. For 43 years, ACCA volunteers have operated programs which provide financial assistance, food and other necessities, furniture, and transportation for our needy neighbors.

ACCA also operates a Child Development Center which provides high quality daycare and early education for more than 180 infants, toddlers, and preschoolers on the former Annandale Elementary School site. The CDC staff--all professionally qualified--are suppported by volunteers from local schools, colleges, churches and community groups.

Hi Mary Anne Lecos, the above mentioned residents are singled out solely because their name was in the press release, not because we intentionally left out others who volunteer in Annandale. We know there are hundreds of people who volunteer every day and many are being recognized at the award ceremony. 400+ is a lot of people and we can't mention them all in one go, but we certainly want to speak with them! Annandale Patch has been advertising for weeks our desire to speak with people who volunteer here in the Annandale community. If you'd like to pass on this announcement: http://patch.com/N-NRF to anyone you know who volunteers, I'd appreciate it! If you're a volunteer, I'm more than happy to speak to you as well.

Also, it looks like you're new to Patch, so welcome! We profiled ACCA last year a few months after we launched in case you haven't had a chance to read it yet: http://annandale.patch.com/articles/annandale-non-profit-still-helping-those-in-need-after-four-decades and several people from ACCA are active in posting announcements here on Annandale Patch. We occasionally feature them on our homepage.
