Annandale's Giuseppe Lanzone Selected for U.S. Olympic Team

The 30-year-old will compete on the men's rowing team for Team USA.

Annandale's Giuseppe Lanzone has been selected to participate in the 2012 London Olympics as part of the U.S. Olympic Team. Lanzone will compete with the men's rowing team.

According to his athletic profile on the Team USA website, 30-year-old Lanzone was born in La Punta, Peru, but considers Annandale as his hometown. He attended where he began rowing in 1999. He placed ninth in the men's four event during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

The men's rowing team consists of a total of 24 rowers. Lanzone will compete in the men's eight race.

A press release on Tuesday states that there are a total of 530 athletes on this year's U.S. team., comprised of 269 women and 261 men, the first time in history that Team USA features more female athletes.

The U.S. will be represented in 25 sports, or 38 disciplines, and 246 of the 302 medal events.

Another athlete from Annandale competed during the U.S. Olympic Trials to try and make the final team. Michael Flach, 21, finished eighth in the men’s 200-meter butterfly finals in swimming with a time of 1:59:43.

's Andrew Seliskar, a rising sophomore, also competed in his first career Olympic trials swim last month in Omaha, Neb. Seliskar was one of the youngest swimmers competing and even finished 18th overall in the 200-meter individual medley.

The 2012 London Olympic games last from July 27 to Aug. 12.
