Bill Clinton Helps Virginia Dems Raise $1 Million

The Virginia Senate Democratic Caucus raised more than $1 million Friday with an appearance by former U.S. President Bill Clinton. Clinton spoke to more than 300 Virginia Democrats for about 20 minutes at the home of former Democratic National Committee chair and likely 2013 Virginia Gubernatorial nominee Terry McAuliffe in McLean, Va.
"I got a pretty good idea how the 21st century works, and there's not a single successful country on the planet that operates on the theory that the government is the problem. Not one," Clinton said. "Every successful country has both a strong private economy and a smart strong government that work together to try to create economic opportunity, educational opportunity, provide decent health care and get a good future."
The Virginia Senate Democrats hold a slim majority—22 seats to the Republicans' 18 seats.
"We're in a tight race. Everybody knows that. We've got five or six races that we are watching, we are helping, we are working," said Virginia Senate Majority Leader Dick Saslaw (D-35). "We have not been outspent or outraised, even in the race for Governor, in one single race… and that's what's put us where we are today, and damn it, we're gonna stay there."
Guests paid between $1,000 and $10,000 to attend the fundraiser, and McAuliffe said Virginia can't afford Republicans.
"Ronald Reagan raised taxes 13 times. I know it was his 100th birthday and everybody's all jacked up, but that's what you get when you get them," he said, adding that the fundraiser is the biggest moneymaking event in the history of Virginia General Assembly races. "Folks, we need money to fight, because we know we're right on the issues. And if you don't fight, you don't win."
Clinton decried the Tea Party and its influence on Washington. "The last thing you want to do is to stick this violent part of America with an anti-government strategy in every level of government," he said. "Every state senator here will find a way to survive [if they lose], but you will pay a price, and the children of the Commonwealth of Virginia will pay a price."

Warner, Webb and Connally have voted lockstep with the dummocrats since Obama was elected. Our economy is in the crapper, and it is truly amateur hour in the White House. So, the dems march out Bill Clinton, who has the morals of a two-bit hooker, to garner support, and seemingly intelligent Virginia citizens spit up a million bucks to continue to support a political party that is hellbent on spending the US into oblivion. Yep, I am clinging to my guns and religion, because if Odumbo is reelected, that is all I will have left.

After too many years of Republican pandering to the lowest common denominator to protect the highest earners with nonsensical taglines and pablum, I am glad to see Occupy Wall Street representing the rest of us. Call me the intelligent middle. And I am glad to see the President who saw our nation through the best of times for ALL (not just a privileged few) is helping raise money for the guys who will give us a sane counter balance to Eric Cantor and his fellow right wing nuts.

Do not understand why people must leave such hate filled rhetoric. I doubt we will ever be able to bring people together for the greater good.. As long as we are so critical of each other the world will one day implode from all the hate. God bless us all and please shower this world with some love and peace.

In addition to repealing Glass-Steagall, that had prohibited banks from engaging in full range of investment activites, the Clinton Administration in 1995 revised the "Community Reinvestment Act," originially passed in 1977 by Pres Carter, to increase the number and amount of mortgage loans to low income borrowers, which some allege helped cause the subprime housing crisis. Clinton's Sec of Treasury Rubin also rejected Clinton's own CFTC chairman's call to regulate private derivataive contracts, which became a major spark of the global financial crisis. While there is plenty of blame for all, seeds of the current problems were planted under Clinton.

Carter Glass was an impressive Democratic U.S. Senator from Virginia who also co-sponsored the Federal Reserve Act of 1913. We need to restore Glass-Steagall as it was signed into law by FDR on June 16, 1933.

Carter Glass was an unapologetic racist who bragged about disenfranchising 125,000 Virginians of African American descent.
The 1995 CRA amendments had next to nothing to do with the 2008 meltdown according to CBO, GAO and many independent analysts. According to those same sources, most of the subprime mortgages were refis of folks who amply qualified for their original purchase and used the subprime loan to pull all the equity in their home after the fact.

I noticed your reply referenced the CRA, not the Glass-Steagall Act. What is your opinion on Glass-Steagall? Do we agree, as I said nothing about the CRA?
Again, thank you for stating Carter Glass' record as a racist. We need to know and to stand for equality. Sadly, we have many in the Democratic party of the same period who had that flawed mindset.

I am not exactly sure which Patch Susan Larson is associated with. I do get confused about which Patch editor monitors these articles sometimes. I log into Reston Patch and sometimes find myself on Annandale Patch when I click onto an article. Nevertheless, I was informed by Ms. Larson that my comment was deleted for being "abusive or offensive"!!??? My comment was NOT abusive or offensive. I simply disagreed with someone who called him/herself intelligent. Other commenters on are much more "offensive" than mine was. Anyway, I did not curse or call anyone a name. If I can't express my view (I'm careful now, believe me), I will not pay attention to any of the advertisers on Patch. Advertisers pay the $$$$$$ or the Patch goes under. I will try to spend my money at places that DON'T advertise on Patch if this nonsense persists
