Police: Fatal Crash in Annandale Area

The following items are from recent police updates through Oct. 31 from the Franconia, West Springfield and Mason police districts of the Fairfax County Police Department.

Fatal Crash (red on above map), On Thursday, Oct. 25, around 2:15 a.m., police responded to a fatal crash on Backlick Road in the Annandale area.

A 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe was traveling northbound on Backlick Road when the driver failed to negotiate a curve prior to John Marr Drive. The Tahoe crossed the double yellow line and left the roadway on the southbound side of Backlick Road and struck a pole. The driver was ejected. Maximiliano Ponce-Cruz, 27, of Annandale died at the scene.

Speed and alcohol are considered factors in the crash. Preliminary investigation suggests Ponce-Cruz was not wearing a seat belt.

In separate and unrelated incidents:

Robbery (yellow on above map), 4500 block of Logsdon Drive, 10/30/12, 9:10 p.m. The two victims were walking home when two suspects approached them. One suspect hit the male victim and knocked him to the ground. He kicked the male victim while the other suspect chased and caught the female victim. Her purse and cell phone were stolen. The male victim received minor injuries.

Robbery (yellow on above map), 4700 block of Southland Avenue, 9:15 p.m. The three adult victims were near a vehicle when three suspects approached and demanded money. They struck one victim and fled with cash and a cell phone.

Burglary (green on above map), 4700 block of Americana Drive, 10/25/12, 6:30 p.m. A resident reported someone entered their home and stole cash. There were no signs of forced entry.

Burglary (green on above map), 3300 block of Woodburn Village Drive, 10/25/12, 6:20 p.m. A resident reported someone entered his home and stole cash. There were no signs of forced entry.

Assault (purple on above map), 7800 block of Rectory Lane, 10/26/12, 2:30 p.m. A teenage girl was walking home from school when another teenager girl allegedly punched the victim. A fight started and a third girl entered the fight and also allegedly struck the victim. Both juvenile suspects were charged with assault.

  • 7900 block of Heritage Drive - bag with cell phone from park
  • 4900 block of Beauregard Street - parking stickers from vehicle
  • 7400 block of Franklin Road - laptop and briefcase from vehicle

  • 7600 block of Little River Turnpike - 1999 Lexus ES430
