Scoreboard: Big Football Wins for Annandale, Falls Church and Jefferson High Schools
A summary of the games from last week and upcoming matches.
Here's a brief look at where the Annandale High School Atoms, Thomas Jefferson Colonials, Falls Church High School Jaguars, and W.T. Woodson Cavaliers currently stand and the upcoming games for some of the fall sports.
The Annandale Atoms (7-3) won 2-0 over the Lee Lancers last Thursday following a 2-0 win over Madsion High on Monday. See photos from the game, which won the Patch Patriot District Game of the Week poll. The girls play away at West Springfield on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. The Jaguars (1-7-2) lost 0-1 to the Jefferson Colonials (6-5-2) last week and play away at Hayfield on Tuesday while the Colonials face Langley High at home on Friday.
The Woodson Cavaliers (4-3-2) didn't fare as well on Thursday, falling 2-0 to South County. The Cavaliers play away and face West Potomac on Tuesday.
On Friday, the Annandale Atoms (1-2) beat the J.E.B Stuart Raiders 32-27 at home, marking the Atom's first win over the Raiders in a series since 1962. According to the AHS Athletic website, receiver and senior Nolan Gilbert and quarterback and junior Steve Schwartz "connected for touchdowns of 14, 80 and 60 yards... sophomore Shawn Courtney also caught a touchdown pass of 21 yards from Schwartz... and senior Joe Bermingham added a touchdown run of 11 yards for the final Annandale score."
The Falls Church Jaguars (1-2) also had a big win on Friday, defeating the George Marshall Statesmen 45-25 and earning the team their first win since 2010. Read Patch's recap from the game here. The Colonials (2-1) bested Wakefield 45-6 last week and play away against the Raiders on Sept. 21. The Woodson Cavaliers (0-3) fell to Oakton 0-28 and face Lee High School at home.
In college sports, the Northern Virginia Community College volleyball team
The Annandale Atoms (4-4) fell 2-3 to Westfield and face the Falls Church Jaguars on Tuesday at home. The Colonials (5-4) played in the Generals VolleyBRAWL Tournament on Saturday and beat Chesapeake High 2-0 and bested Lake Braddock 2-0, but fell to Yorktown 1-2 and Washngton Lee High 0-2. The Woodson Cavaliers (8-2) beat Mount Vernon 3-0 last Tuesday and play Madison High on Tuesday. The Jaguars (0-7) continue to struggle this season, losing 0-3 to Lake Braddock earlier last week.
