Sunset Grille to Close on Thursday

The popular music venue has been in Annandale for more than 20 years.

Annandale’s will close its doors for good for on Thursday after more than 20 years at its Columbia Pike location.

According to owner Shelton Youtz, Burke & Herbert did not renew the Grille’s option for their lease. Youtz added that the economy and changing demographics in Annandale also had an impact in the decision to close.

“The demographics changed and with the economy how it is, it was a combination of the two. We've been fairly successful in the past with trying different things [to drum up business], but not this time,” said Youtz.

With its bright colors and Christmas lights as decor, the Grille has been a staple in the Annandale community and holds special significance for many of the regular clientele. The venue consistently featured bands from the Northern Virginia area and beyond. Youtz said with the Grille gone, there will be a “void in the entertainment options” in Annandale.

Back in 2010, Youtz expressed of Sunset Grille. "We're running over 30 percent less sales than two years ago… Last year, there was a significant decline and this year, there was even more of a decline than last year. We could definitely tell when the economy really started hurting,” Youtz told Patch.

In addition to live music, the Grille also hosted movie and karaoke nights, entertainment for sports fans such as darts tournaments. The food was also a draw with the venue grilling on the weekend and hosting brunch specials in addition to their regular menu offering of items.

While Youtz is open to relocating, he doesn’t think they’ll look to stay in Annandale. “The demographics won't support our type of establishment,” said Youtz. “[I’ll miss] how it used to be. It was a nice little town outside of a major metropolitan area.”

Sunset Grille will host a farewell party on Wednesday night, featuring music from Big Fat Daddy at 8:30 p.m., and on Thursday with the Thrillbilly’s taking the stage at 8:30 p.m.
