The Varied Media of Annandale Artist Corinne Hiland

Hiland, who uses multiple kinds of media in her work, will have her first show at Annandale's Beanetics Coffee Roasters today

Annandale resident Corinne Hiland is the latest local artist to have her work on display at Annandale’s popular coffeehouse Beanetics. Her installment, titled “Regular Show,” will be on display through Jan. 18. The exhibit is the introverted and somewhat reclusive artist’s first show. Her artist reception is today from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Beanetics.

Hiland, originally from California, writes (she’s written two novels and several short stories), paints, draws and takes photographs, often switching between the media. Much of the Beanetics exhibit features her photography which varies as much her interests do. One recurring theme in her work is one of her hobbies; sailing.

Another frequent theme is coffee. Hiland is a manager at Beanetics and said as a professional roaster she sees processes that captivate her such as the roasting of the coffee bean. One of her pieces shows the gradual transformation of the jade-colored Kenyan coffee bean, which is roasted at 10 different temperatures, straight from the berry to the darkened bean.

Hiland creates from various objects that intrigue and inspire her simultaneously. An example of this is her piece, “Petals,” which is composed of a magnifying glass and teeth with gold pieces mounted with silver wire.

One of her photographs on display is of children's toys. Having cared for her nephew, Hiland said she was fascinated by the bright colors of the toys and the way children organize them.

Hiland has lived all over the country, including in Kentucky and Tennessee, but chose to make her home here in Annandale. She has overcome four cancerous tumors in her life, but is now cancer-free and expects to remain so. She underwent a round of chemotherapy just this past week.

Jennifer Judelsohn of The Evolution of Art and curator of the exhibit said she was drawn to Hiland’s work because of her wide range of talents. Judelsohn considers Hiland a risk taker.  “Who puts teeth in her art?” Judelsohn said.

Some of Hiland’s more controversial work will not be on display.
