Wakefield Skatepark Expansion Officially Opens
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at the new Wakefield Skatepark on Saturday morning.
Fairfax County and Fairfax County Park Authority representatives spoke at a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Wakefield Skatepark expansion. Marie Reinsdorf, Fairfax County Park Authority board secretary, welcomed all the guests and introduced Braddock District Supervisor John Cook and Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova. A number of residents and skate park users joined the three speakers for the actual ribbon cutting.
Members of the Fairfax Surf Shop Skate Team gave a short demonstration after the ceremony and then the park was opened to all skateboarders.
The 6,220 square foot skate park addition was started in the spring and adds elements similar to what a skateboarder would find in public spaces. The $388,000 expansion was funded in the 2008 Park Bond and is already very popular with local skateboarders.

It's a blessing that our kids can finally participate in an active sport like this with few rules and no pads or helmets required. I applaud all who encouraged the skate park to happen with minimal red tape. Great job!
