Water Main Break Collapses Road in Annandale
The break occurred on Wednesday morning. Service has since been returned to affected homes, but road repairs continue.
An eight-inch water main break caused the street at the intersection of Springbrook Drive and Eddystone Street to collapse on Wednesday morning. The collapsed road is located in the Canterbury Woods community in Annandale.
"The break is right at the intersection and it undermined integrity of the road for about a block," said Jeanne Bailey, spokesperson for Fairfax Water.
A news alert from Braddock District Supervisor John Cook's office suggests residents park away from the collapsed road and walk to their homes.
Bailey could not indicate what time the break happened, but said all water service has since returned to all of the homes affected. According to Bailey, it took crews less than four hours to repair the break and restore water service to the surrounding homes. Bailey said there were no injuries either crew or civilian and no apparent damage done to the homes impacted by the break.
Supervisor Cook's office states that Miss Utility and Washington Gas also responded to the scene. Bailey said Washington Gas has assured residents that the gas line was not impacted and service to the homes should be working properly.
Fairfax Water crews will remain on site at the intersection throughout Wednesday evening to ensure no unforeseen problems arise. Bailey said the utility company wants to make sure the line is not damaged again while crews work to repair the road.
Any Fairfax Water customers still experiencing problems with their water can call 703-698-5800 during normal hours or the non-emergency line at 703-698-5613 to report problems.
