Starting Middle and High Schools Later for Woodson Pyramid School Parents

US Secretary of Education tweeted recently “Common sense to improve student achievement that too few have implemented: let teens sleep more, Start School Later.” 

What is all the fuss about? Why is this issue being raised again? Why should you care?

Health and policy expert, Judith Owen, internationally-recognized authority on pediatric sleep from Children's National Medical Center (CNMC) will describe the research and neurobehavioral and health consequences of school start times. School Board Member,  Megan McLaughlin, will also speak.  The Fairfax School Board hired CNMC to work with the school system and the community to develop a "Blueprint for Change" for FCPS, based on other school districts that have made the change,  to reach its goal to start high schools after 8 a.m. This is an opportunity for early involvement, Q and A and a beginning to this dialogue.  Start times could change in Fall 2014.
