Fire Fatality, Dog Days, Robbery Arrests, Gumbo for Good and Ready for 40 Tons of ... Sand?

Plus, woman released from jail to have an abortion flew the coop.

By Todd Richissin

Every dog has its day, and it's today for two dogs, one that needs a root canal and one that needs to be found.

The first dog, Blu, was retired by Metro Transit Police after he broke a few teeth that will need a root canal and caps to fix. His human partner has begun a fundraiser to fix the problem, which would put Blu back on duty.

And our second dog, Houdini, has been missing since September, but has been spotted in various parts of Alexandria. Good neighbors that they are, the people at Pork Barrel BBQ restaurant in Del Ray are offering free barbecue for a year to the person who provides information leading to the safe return of the missing Australian shepherd.

Yes, the daily digest has gone to the dogs. They lead our stories from around our Patches in Virginia and Washington, DC. Their tales, and more, below.
