Annandale Businesses, Residents Participate in 9th Annual Annandale Bed Race

The event raises money for the Virginia Special Olympics.

Under the cover of gray clouds and the occasional downpour of rain, more than 15 teams competed in the 9th Annual Annandale Hospital Bed Race Saturday morning.

Every year, teams race hospital beds, which are donated for the event and decorated by the residents and the businesses prior to the beginning of the event, up and down John Marr Drive in heats.

The race is sponsored by the Annandale Chamber of Commerce and benefits the Virginia Special Olympics.

Fairfax County Chairman Sharon Bulova and Mason District Supervisor Penelope Gross both briefly stopped by the race to show their support. Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-11th) participated in the event, announcing the winners and posing for photos with the teams.

Carol Zach-Reuss, manager of the Annandale Shopping Center and creator and organizer of the bed race, said she was initially concerned because of the rain, but she was happy with the turnout.

"The amount of people that showed up here today to show their support shows that we need to keep holding the race," said Zach-Reuss. "It really is a one-of-a-kind event."

Participating teams in this year’s race included Beanetics, Fairfax County Police Department, Hapmudo Martial Arts, Navy Federal Credit Union, Pro MAXX Fitness, the Arlington Sheriff's Office, the the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department and others.

The Arlington Sheriff's Office won for the best time, Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department won most entertaining and the Navy Federal Credit Union team won best decorated.
