ACCA CROP Walk Set for Oct. 13, Seeks Volunteers

The event raised over $5,000 for the Annandale non-profit last year.

Walkers and volunteers from the Annandale area will take to the pavement and walk for a cause on Saturday, Oct. 13 for Annandale Christian Community for Action’s (ACCA) annual CROP Walk.

CROP, which stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty, began in 1969, but the walk has been around in Annandale for a little more than 30 years, according to Annandale CROP Hunger Walk Coordinator Camille Mittelholtz.

“The purpose is to raise money for Church World Service. They support projects all over the world. They also support poverty and work with organizations around the United States to sponsor CROP walks,” said Mittelholtz.

The 10K walk raises money through its participants. Most of the CROP walk participants come from ACCA churches, but anyone can volunteer. Mittelholtz said participants can also get sponsors for the walk or make their own donations.

Part of the money raised goes to the organizations sponsoring the walks like ACCA. Last year, the CROP walk raised $22,318 in donations by cash, check, online and matching grants. ACCA received around $5,907 of that amount. According to Mittelholtz, ACCA uses the money for the food pantry and Child Development Center (CDC) services.

“It’s a nice additional source of funding for us, “ said Mittelholtz.

The walk begins at 8:30 a.m., but registration opens at 8 a.m. at ake Accotink Marina. Mittelholtz said the walk has been at Lake Accotink for the last few years.

Prior to the start, there will be a short ceremony and Chairman Sharon Bulova, Mason District Supervisor Penny Gross, and Braddock District Supervisor John Cook will offer remarks.

Volunteers are still needed to help out on the day of the event serving refreshments. Those interested in helping out can email Mittelholtz at kcmittelholtz@gmail.com.
