Animal Welfare League of Alexandria Hosts Back to School Adoption Event

The adoption event will end on Sept. 11.

Annandale residents who missed out on the event have another opportunity to adopt a pet not too far from the community.

The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria is hosting a "Back to School" Adoption Event until Sept. 11 at the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter,  located at 4101 Eisenhower Ave. The event began on Wednesday.

According to a press release, the goal of the event is to "find permanent, loving homes for all animals in the shelter before the end of summer."

“The adoption event is a fun way to engage potential adopters as they prepare for the start of another school year,” Kathy Vellenga, director of adoption programs, said in the release. “August is typically a slow period for animal adoptions around the country and we want to help our animals, many of whom have been here the entire summer, find the homes they deserve.”

The event will feature different promotions every week and will include adoption promotions. The release lists the promotions as follows:

Aug. 15-21: Rush Week
Aug. 22-28: Fill Your Empty Nest
Aug. 29-Sept. 4: Meet the Class of 2012
Sept. 5-Sept. 11: “Bark” to School Week

The Vola Lawson Animal Shelter will be open adoptions and animal viewing from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. on  Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and from noon to
5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The shelter is closed on Wednesday.
