Call for Help: Annandale and Local Groups Need Supplies

Connect with Northern Virginia organizations that need food, volunteers in aftermath of derecho

Several area organizations, centers and homes in Northern Virginia are going on more than 48 powers without power, drinkable water, or in some cases, food or resources.

We're compiling a list of these groups that need food, water, fans or volunteers over the next several days.

  1. is always accepting donations. No specific ones are needed due to the storm, but residents are welcome to drop off clothes, canned goods or other non-perishable items for the pantry. Call 703-256-0100 with any questions.
  2. Bethany House of Northern Virginia put out a call on their Twitter account on Monday for food and water donations that they could pass along to the women and children they help. They're located at 6121 Lincolnia Road, St. 303 Alexandria, VA.
  3. Lamb Center: 3220 Old Lee Highway, Fairfax City. The drop-in center for the homeless in Fairfax City needs cooked food. Volunteers can drop off items until 3 p.m. Monday and during normal business hours (8 a.m. to 3 p.m.) Tuesday. With the extreme heat, the Lamb Center is tending to a high volume of clients. 703-691-3178.
  4. Shepherd's Center: The Shepherd's Center of Oakton-Vienna doesn't have any specific needs at this time, but said it would help their clients if residents made sure to check in on their elderly neighbors. 703-281-0538
  5. Embry Rucker Community Shelter, 11975 Bowman Towne Dr. Reston, VA 20190, needs the following donations:
    -Bottled water
    -Bottled juice
    -Bagged meals
    -Coolers of ice
    -Snacks (fruit, granola bars, etc.)

  6. Emergency and Self-Sufficiency Services Program (Food Pantry),  11484 Washington Plaza West, Ste. 120, Reston.
    Needed donations:
    -Canned meats
    -Canned vegetables
    -Canned soups
    -Ramen Noodles
    -Beans (any kind)
    -$25 Gift Cards for Giant, Harris Teeter, or Safeway

  7. Our Daily Bread, 4080 Chain Bridge Rd., 2nd Floor, Fairfax, VA 22030. From Development Manager Jennifer Rose: "With the power out for so many and for extended periods of time, our clients are in great need of grocery gift cards in $10 and $20 increments so they can re-stock their refrigerators with perishable items such as fresh produce, milk, eggs, and meat. Our Daily Bread does not provide non-perishable items to clients, but rather these small gift cards that they are able to use to purchase the non-perishable goods that are best suited for their dietary needs.
