Cinco de Mayo in Annandale

Where (and why) we'll be celebrating

Cinco de Mayo is more than an excuse to party.

The day celebrates the Battle of Puebla, which took place May 5, 1862 (next year is the 150th anniversary of the battle). In the battle, a Mexican force of 4,500 defeated a much larger French army in a four-hour battle during the Franco-Mexican War.  It is not the most important Mexican holidays and, in fact, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated more in the United States than it is in Mexico.

According to the U.S. Census, there were 31.7 million U.S. residents of Mexican origin in 2009. Mexican people make up 10 percent of the U.S population.
