Large Sinkhole Shuts Down Hummer Road in Annandale

Fairfax Water crews are currently on scene repairing a small water main break, believed to have caused the sinkhole.

A large sinkhole on Hummer Road near Pleasant Way in Annandale shut down a portion of the street closest to Gallows Road Monday morning.

car drove into and was found stuck in the sinkhole earlier this morning, but no one was injured, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

The sinkhole was caused by a small water main break that occurred just before 7 a.m. this morning. Jeanne Bailey, spokesperson for Fairfax Water, said Fairfax Water repair crews were on scene all morning repairing the break.

Bailey estimated the break only affected a small amount of customers and said the weather likely was a factor in causing the water main break. As of 11:05 a.m., crews were mostly done with repairs to the main, Bailey said.

Hummer Road was closed Monday morning from Walton Lane to Marshall Drive due to the sinkhole, but also because of a downed tree across the northbound lane and a downed power line, according to emails from residents to Annandale Patch.
