MDCCA to Hold Meeting About Infill Development on Tuesday

The community association is inviting residents to an informational meeting to discuss infill development in Mason District.

The Mason District Council of Community Associations will host a public meeting in Alexandria on Tuesday, Jan. 17 at 7:30 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church for residents of Mason District to discuss the risks and issues associated with infill development ans rezoning.

According to a press release about the meeting, "infill development and rezoning, especially that under Planned Development Housing (PDH), are significant issues for many neighborhoods in Mason District and are often opposed by community associations trying to manage aging infrastructure, congested roads and increased traffic, floods from poor storm water management and code compliance violations."

Kate Sriwardene, president of the Wilburdale Civic Association in Annandale, Carol Turner and John Iekel, co-presidents of the Ravenwood Park Civic Association in Falls Church and Fred Costello, chair of the Fairfax Federation Citizens Association Land Use Committee will speak at the meeting. Sriwardene will discuss the rezoning and storm water management issues facing the Wilburdale community while Turner and Iekel will address Ravenwood's potential infill zoning.

“The beauty of Mason District is its parks and neighborhoods," said Turner in the press release. “Community leaders in Mason District do not oppose development that fits in with our existing neighborhoods, but we need our county planners to follow smart growth principles in the County’s own comprehensive planning document. New developments in Mason District must fit in with existing neighborhoods and not tax the aging infrastructure... We call upon county officials to support its citizens,” Turner continued. “Mason District citizens are fighting an uphill battle against a rezoning process that is cumbersome and overly tilted for the benefit of land developers.
