Park Authority to Replace Bridge in Canterbury Woods Park

Construction on the new bridge in the Annandale park is expected to begin within the next several weeks.

Annandale residents who frequent Canterbury Woods Park will soon share the park space with construction crews as the Fairfax County Park Authority begins work on the Canterbury Woods Bridge Replacement project in a few weeks.

The original park bridge was washed away during Tropical Storm Lee in September 2011, according to a news release from the Park Authority. In addition to building a new 60’ steel framed pedestrian bridge, the project includes adding approximately 75 feet of stream bank restoration.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $302,000. Funding for the bridge will be paid for by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.

Construction crews will access the bridge from the Canterbury Woods Swim Club parking lot, which is located at 5101 Southampton Dr.  in Annandale. Residents will be unable to access certain parts of the swim club's parking lot during the construction.

Some parts of the existing Long Branch Stream Valley trail will also be closed temporarily during the bridge construction.

The Park Authority anticipates the project will be complete in winter 2013.
