Public Hearing for Parklawn Cell Tower Set for Wednesday

Residents will be able to speak in favor or against the tower in front of the Fairfax County Planning Commission.

Annandale-area residents will have the chance to voice their opinions on AT&T's proposal to build a cell phone tower in the Parklawn community at a public hearing in front of the Fairfax County Planning Commission Wednesday.

The hearing is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. at the Fairfax County Government Center Board Auditorium located at 12000 Government Center Parkway in Fairfax.

Residents have been divided about the application (2232-M08-26/SEA-93M-047) to build a 128 ft. tall monopole on the Parklawn Recreation Association (PRA) property at 6011 Crater Place in Alexandria since it was announced earlier this year.

The discussion over the tower has caused some tension in the divided Parklawn community as residents have argued for or against the monopole in their community. Many of the residents against the tower have spoken out at Mason District Land Use Committee (MDLUC) meetings and a group started PACACT in order to protest the tower.

Some residents have also openly supported the tower in the past, including PRA president Heath Brown, who said the monopole would provide the community pool with much-needed revenue at an MDLUC meeting in March.

The Parklawn Civic Association has not taken an official position on the cell phone tower. Back at a meeting in May, the MDLUC voted to recommend that the Planning Commission approve the application.

Residents can sign up to speak at Wednesday's public hearing by pre-registering online or by calling 703-324-2865 before 3 p.m. on July 10. Speakers not on the list will also be recognized by the commission once all registered speakers have presented.

The application will go in front of the Fairfax County Board of Zoning Appeals on Wednesday, July 17 at 9 a.m.
