Snow, Ice Chances Increasing for Northern Virginia, Forecasters Say

Northern Virginia will see a major shift in the weather: Balmy temps Thursday, rain and wind Friday, possible snow and ice Sunday.

Just as Northern Virginia is about to see "freakishly mild" weather Thursday and Friday, forecasters said Wednesday that chances are increasing for ice and snow to hit the area beginning early Sunday.

The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang headline says it all: "Threat of wintry mess Sunday grows."

But first: The mild temps. Expect foggy conditions Thursday morning with highs in the mid-60s across the area, according to the National Weather Service; temperatures will reach about 60 Friday with a 100 percent chance of rain Friday, especially heavy and windy Friday night. Temps will start to drop Friday afternoon, into the 40s. By Saturday, the high will be only 41 degrees.

Forecasters are eyeing the wicked Arctic blast roiling its way eastward that is pounding western states. Some mountain areas out West are seeing up to two feet of snow, according to NBC. Duluth, Minn. saw 26 inches of snow Tuesday and was expected to get another foot Wednesday.

Sunday Weather

Here's the timeline, according to the Capital Weather Gang:
Sunday, 4-8 a.m.: Ice or snow (the National Weather Service says there is a 40 percent chance of freezing rain after midnight Saturday)
Sunday, after 8 a.m. into early afternoon: Icing could continue in western suburbs; rain east of I-95

The Weather Gang's Jason Samenow says ice is a threat Sunday for areas along and west of Manassas to Fairfax. The high Sunday is expected to be 36 degrees.

Sunday morning, chances for more than 1 inch of snow: 40 percent for Western suburbs, and for more than 4 inches of snow: a 15 percent chance for Western suburbs, Samenow notes.

By Monday, temperatures swing back up to 51 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
