Wakefield Skatepark, located in near the , may look a little different now that the year-long construction on the park's expansion is now complete.
To celebrate the new expansion, the Fairfax County Park Authority will hold a celebration on Saturday at 11 a.m. that will include demonstrations, refreshments and more.
, Judy Pedersen, public information officer with the Fairfax County Park Authority, told Patch that the expansion would include a bigger skating area and a new shade structure. Specifically, the Park Authroity added an additional 6,220 square feet of concrete skating area and a 400 square foot shade structure will be placed in the center of the new facility.
The skatepark has been a popular attraction since it opened in 2004. To accommodate the different skill levels of those who use the park, Pedersen said “the addition will have ramps, rails and a large skate area, along with a covered oasis in the middle of the expansion... elements skaters would find in typical public spaces such as benches, stairs and curbs.”
The celebration on Saturday is free and open to the public.
