Water Main Break Shuts Off Water on Cherokee Avenue and 8th Street

An 12-inch water main break left residents on Cherokee Avenue and 8th Street near the Lincolnia part of the greater Annandale area without water Friday morning.

Jeanne Bailey, spokesperson for Fairfax Water, said crews arrived at 5 a.m. to shut the water off.

A total of 15 homes on Cherokee Avenue and 8th Street were initially affected by the outage. Bailey said water was restored to the 8th Street homes earlier Friday morning, leaving 10 homes on Cherokee Avenue still without water.

Crews have been working steadily all morning to repair the break. As of 11 a.m., crews were still on site. Bailey estimated water would be restored to the homes by 3 p.m. Friday afternoon.

Bailey said it would be difficult to say how the break occurred as multiple factors, including winter weather, could have caused the break.

Once water is returned to the homes, crews will begin patching the road back together. Bailey said a temporary cold patch and gravel will be placed on the road. Crews will return possibly next week at the earliest to place a permanent patch on the road.

A resident on Cherokee Avenue reported being alerted to the break at 3:45 a.m. and said the water was shut off to his home between 4:30 a.m. and 4:45 a.m. Fairfax County police were on scene during the break.
