  • School: Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology
  • Accomplishment: Each of the students is a member of the three teams chosen as finalists in the annual Conrad Foundation Spirit of Innovation Challenge. The competition challenges students to create commercially viable solutions to real world, 21 s t century problems. They will compete for a grant of $5,000 at an innovation summit April 28-May 1 at NASA Ames Research Center in California.

George Wang and Min Cheol Kim are Team BEHD. Their invention is bacteria energy harvesting device extracts energy from everyday trash and converts it into electricity.

Meredith Burkle, Usnish Majumdar, Sam Girvin, and Daniel Jang are Team CIRPSICSR and they created an ULTRApod, an underwater unit that uses turbines to harness hydrokinetic energy from a flowing river.  The ULTRApod uses the electricity to power an ultraviolet chamber that disinfects and purifies the river water.

Carrie Sun and Kevin Sun are Team Lambda2.4 and they’ve created DroidShepherd, a tool for the Android mobile platform that provides the capacity to detect and disable Firesheep session sidejacking attempts on public Wi-Fi networks.  DroidShepherd is designed to combat hacking efforts that steal authenticated session cookies by sending out fake and random data and listening for a response.

Know a child who goes above and beyond to help those in need? How about a student who's constantly setting the bar higher day by day? Or maybe a youngster who's endured an amazing journey already in life? !
