Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer Set to Play at Mason District Park Tonight

The local folk duo will play a family-friendly concert at Spotlight by Starlight

Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer will return to Amphitheater on Friday, June 24 for an evening of traditional and contemporary folk, old-time country and swing music.

The duo’s performance is part of the Spotlight by Starlight summer concert series. The two-time Grammy® Award winners have been performing together for more than 25 years. The Washington Area Music Association has recognized the duo with 50 WAMMY Awards for folk, bluegrass and children’s music.

What can local concert goers expect from your performance on Friday?

We will bring a folk festival’s worth of instruments including five-string banjo, cello banjo and banjo ukulele, electric and acoustic guitars, ukuleles, washboard, mandolin and more. We’ll sing, harmonize, invite the audience to sing with us and plan an all-ages family concert.

How has your sound evolved over the past 25 years? Is there a particular genre that you enjoy playing more than another at this stage in your careers?

Hopefully, practice has either made perfect, or at least improvement! We have learned so much in the past 25 years and we enjoy playing all the music we bring: swing, old time, folk, original, kids, country...

When did you develop Cathy & Marcy’s Song Shop and what has that experience been like?

We started using this “brand” title in 1996 with our first live concert for kids and family videos. It’s such a broad title, it still means we can do whatever we want. We like the image of our imaginary song shop where we learn old songs and make up new ones, with 100 instruments on the walls to play and inspire us.

What is your favorite part of being a folk duo?

The best part of this job is connecting people and music and making friends in the process. Yesterday, a grandpa brought his seven-month-old granddaughter to a concert. He so loved our shows with his own children that he took the day off work to make sure his granddaughter would get the “right” musical start!

Who would you recommend Friday's concert to? Do you think that music fans unfamiliar with folk, country or swing would still enjoy your performance?

We play all over the world and introduce our music to new fans all the time. It’s our job to create a vibe that makes everyone feel welcome and glad to be there. That’s part of the fun.

Outdoor lawn concert; cancelled by 3:30 p.m. day of the show if inclement weather. Click here for more information on Cathy & Marcy.
