Update: More than 1,000 Dominion Power Customers in Annandale Without Power

Friday's thunderstorms, which started early afternoon, caused downed trees and power outages across Northern Virginia.

Update 6 p.m.: A flash flood warning is in effect for Fairfax County until 7:30 p.m.

The Nu-Blu concert tonight at Mason District Park is cancelled due to the inclement weather. The Braddock Nights concerts at Lake Accotink Park in Springfield and Royal Lake Park in Fairfax are also cancelled due to inclement weather.

There are reports of downed trees on Braddock Road and Backlick Road and near Ravensworth Road. According to a Patch reader on the Annandale Patch Facebook page, there are at least three trees down on lines on Cherokee Avenue and Chowan Avenue. The Lincolnia Park Recreation Club is also without power on Montrose Street.

The Harris Teeter in Barcroft Plaza still has power, but the Harris Teeter on Duke Street in Alexandria just outside of Lincolnia does not have power.

A little over 1,000 homes in the Annandale-area including North Springfield and Lincolnia are currently without power following a severe thunderstorm that swept through the Northern Virginia area Friday afternoon.

The majority of the homes in the dark appear to be near Lincolnia Road where 776 customers are without power as of 4:30 p.m., according to the Dominion Virginia Power outage map. Backlick Road in Annandale has about 50 homes without power.

Across Northern Virginia, Dominion is aware of about 35,000 customers without power — most in Arlington, Alexandria and the Springfield area of Fairfax County, spokeswoman Le-Ha Anderson told Patch. The Fairfax County emergency blog reports that about 11,000 customers in the county don't have power.

Dominion crews have been dispatched and were beginning to assess damage and make repairs as of about 4:45 p.m.

"That was a pretty powerful storm that came through, lots of lightning," Anderson said. "Some of our equipment was struck by lightning."
The power company does not yet have an estimate as to when electricity will be restored.

To report a power outage, call Dominion Power's outage line at 1-866-366-4357.

Patch will update this story with more information as it becomes available.
