Dining Out on Mother's Day

According to a survey conducted by the National Retail Federation (NRF), many consumers will splurge on brunch or dinner for Mother's Day this year. Consumers are expected to spend a total of about $3.5 billion.

There are plenty of local restaurants to considering dining at with your mom, including Silverado, The JukeBox Diner, Magill's Pizza, and Foxfire Grill in Pinecrest.

Best Bet for Gifts

The NRF expects flowers, apparel and gift cards to still be popular for Mother's Day. But many consumers are expected to stretch their budgets and splurge on iPads or other tablets, smart phones or jewelry for Mom.

If you're looking for a unique gift and you've got a little cash to spare, try Shamma's Antiques in the Antiques & Art Emporium in Annandale. Owner Shams (Shaa) Sherwan recommended his shop's music boxes as a gift option. The music boxes, small and large, range in price from $40 to $200 for sale. There's also dozens of shops inside the Emporium to shop at and look for gifts.

Additionally, Artisans United Craft Gallery has a variety of handmade, one-of-a-kind pieces for sale from various artisans from the area. You can find jewelry, clothing, purses and more for sale.

There's also AnnSandra, where you're sure to find elegant crystal dinnerware, flatware and other home decor items.

If your mom has a sweet tooth, forget the usual box of chocolates route: Get her a cupcake, cookie, large cake or other sweet pastry from Tiffany's Bakery, Shilla Bakery, or Le Matin De Paris. There's also Virginia Korean Bakery and Napoleon Bakery.

Giant also has Mother's Day cakes for $5.99.
