Holiday Tips: Perfect Pet Photos

Patch got together with local pet photographer Robin Burkett of PawPrints Photography to help you create the best pet-based holiday card you've ever sent.

From adorable themed accessories to unique winter decor, Robin Burkett of PawPrints Photography can put a twist on the traditional holiday card.

To get started you’re going to need a pet (of course), a camera and an idea for your  holiday card. Ask yourself these questions: Are you going to be in the photo, or is it just your pet? Are you shooting indoors or outdoors? What will your pet’s accessory be?

“Think outside the antlers. There are lots of things that say 'Happy Holidays' for your dog or cat that isn’t so cliché,” said Robin Burkett of Annandale-based PawPrints Photography.  “A nice winter scarf wrapped around your dog’s neck. If you really want to be silly, use ski goggles, too.”

Take your pet's temperament into account, too, so your pet is comfortable with the accessories.

When considering your backdrop, think about the things that represent the  season, or something important to your family. Simple imagery can go a long way, and it will make for an easier shoot.

“Red berries: They are a classic look that say 'holiday' but also looks good
all year round. Or, try a simple ornament on the dog or cat’s collar. Just be sure not to use glass ornaments in case they break,” Burkett said. “Snow, if you can get it, is a great, natural and very pretty holiday card. Don’t wait for it to stop snowing – go out in the snow to capture the flakes landing on your dog.”

If you’re still stumped for an idea, check of Burkett’s list of ideas for finding the perfect card design for your family in the photo gallery above and check back later this season for more tips and ideas from Burkett.

Once you’ve chosen the best shot, you can print the photos at home or take your file to a printers for unique do-it-yourself holiday cards.
