Menchie’s Kicks Off Fundraiser for Muscular Dystrophy Association

The frozen yogurt chain hopes to raise $250,000 by September to help find cures for children and adults affected by neuromuscular diseases.

Menchie’s, a local frozen yogurt store located in the Pinecrest Shopping Plaza just outside of Annandale, has launched a fundraiser to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

The fundraiser is part of an annual national effort by Menchie’s locations throughout the country to aide MDA in their work to find treatments and cures for children and adults affected by muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other neuromuscular diseases.

The money raised at the Pinecrest location will help families served by MDA in the Annandale, Alexandria, and Falls Church areas.

“Menchie’s as a whole, we’re all about community before commerce. We really love giving back to the community and giving back to people in need," said store owner Leigh Miller.

This year’s campaign is the third year Menchie’s has partnered with MDA. The theme for this year’s campaign is superheroes, so Menchie's encourages everyone to “suit up and use their power to make a difference.”

As a company, Menchie’s goal is to raise $250,000 from now until Sept. 3 for MDA. The Pinecrest location’s fundraising goal is about $800.

To donate, Menchie’s guests can purchase a $1 mobile that Miller says will go on display in the store. Each superhero mobile comes with a sticker that says, “pow! I made a difference." As a thank you for donating, guests also receive a 15 percent coupon off their next visit to Menchie’s after Sept. 3.

“Any donation guests can provide is appreciative,” said Miller, who added that since the fundraiser began on Monday, the Pinecrest location has raised about $30.

Menchie’s opened at their location in the Pinecrest Shopping Plaza last year in November. There are more than 260 Menchie’s locations open in the United States, six of which are in Virginia.
