MAXX Fitness Gym Closes Temporarily for Redesign

The new gym will open in the same location as MAXX Fitness likely under a new name.

After more than 10 years in the community, gym, located on Columbia Pike beside the and , has closed.

According to Carol Zach-Reuss, manager of the , the gym closed temporarily last month after the previous owners’ lease expired. A new and renovated gym will open in the same location in spring 2012 under new management.

MAXX Fitness, which was previously known as Athens Gym Fitness & Aerobics Center, has been a fixture in the community. One of the unique programs MAXX offered was its Olympic training regime.

The goal with the new gym, Zach-Reuss said, is to create a “unique gym with real community roots” and “a gym to match the people” in the community. The name for the new gym is still being finalized.

Due to the extent of the renovation, Zach-Reuss said they had no choice but to temporarily close to the public. The new gym will have a more environmentally friendly and sustainable redesign with raised ceilings, options for recycling water bottles and other recyclable items, custom-made furniture and more. The new owners also hope to incorporate some natural elements into the design.

On the fitness side, there are plans to create a new Olympic weight area, an aerobics room, and offer more classes. One of the biggest changes will be the addition of childcare services for members.

The new owners have collaborated with Alexandria based company Tech24 and architect Jeffrey Levine of Levine Design Studio, who worked with the on the , on the redesign.

A date has not been set for when the gym will reopen, but upon completion, Zach-Reuss said the hope is to have a grand opening community event.

A letter posted on the website (which is also posted on the door) addresses some changes to the membership and more:

In the coming weeks, we will be publishing our pre-sales membership specials as well as our daily, weekly, monthly and replacement card rates. We will be offering individual and couple plans. Our couple, family plan, will also allow you to add additional family members at a reasonable rate. Students, military personnel and active adults will be provided with discounted monthly membership and annual membership fees.

… For all past loyal MAXX Fitness members, we apologize for the inconvenience while we create a unique fitness experience for you. We welcome you back to take advantage of a distinctive workout atmosphere and extra amenities when we reopen… New ownership is committed to supporting your fitness goals.

The new owners will honor all memberships and offer one free month to all previous MAXX Fitness members. For now, anyone with questions about their membership or how to purchase membership can call 703-914-9080 or e-mail info@maxxfitnessgym.com.

Hi knaz, for legal reasons, we were asked not to disclose the names of the new owners. As soon as we're allowed to give out that information, we will. Thanks for your question!

Thanks for the article, I was wondering about the gym. Now, can you give us the 411 on the remodeling going on at the old gas station on the corner of Columbia Pike and Evergreen? So nice to see someone taking over that blighted corner and very curious on what will be moving in there.

Hey Tim, thanks for your comment! I have looked at the public records for the old gas shell station and reached out to owners of that property for an interview about their plans since they've already begun working on it. As soon as I receive a response and can verify that information with the county, I'll post a story. Rumor is that it will be a Mexican restaurant. Stay tuned!
