Is Your Ex Dragging Your Auto Rates Up?

Is Your Ex Dragging Your Auto Rates Up?

Auto insurance is mandatory, but again, you want to have an adequate liability limit. State minimums are usually low and defense costs would eat them up before you could blink.  Premiums are high right now, so you want to make sure that you are getting all the available credits.  Ask the agent what credits are available. Some possibilities are anti- theft device, airbags, defensive driving, student away and good student discounts. Although available credits vary by company, the topic should be part of the discussion with the agent. It is also important to be aware that the quoted auto premium can sometimes include the driving and claim record of the ex –spouse. It is not uncommon for the information of the ex-spouse to show up on the report that is used by insurance agents to quote premiums. All companies have access to your motor vehicle record and use something called CLUE which lists loss history. Make sure that you don’t get penalized for your ex! The agent needs to know that you are divorced and that you only want your record to be considered in the quote.
