Five things you need to know today, Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011


1. Check out the at Green Spring Gardens today! It’s taking place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Green Spring Gardens Park, 4603 Green Spring Road.

2. If you prefer the indoors, the will perform at 8 p.m. today at GMU Center for the Arts. Tickets start at $25.

3. On today’s date in 1787, the U.S. Constitution was signed.

4. Also on today’s date, in 1862, the Civil War saw the Battle of Antietam.

5. More recently on today’s date in history, Vanessa Williams becomes first black Miss America in 1983.
