Heat Advisory for Fairfax County in Effect

Heat index is expected to be in the 100s

Fairfax County and most of the Northern Virginia area is under a heat advisory from 12 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday evening.

Temperatures are expected to be in the mid-to-high 90s with heat index values predicted to be in the 100s. The high for Annandale is expected to be 91 degrees.

According to the National Weather Service, during a heat advisory "the combination of temperatures in the mid to upper 90s and high humidity will create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible. The elderly, young children and pets are most at risk."

The NWS also encourages drinking lots of fluids, water and sports drinks especially, and taking breaks in the shade outside in the afternoon. Staying in an air conditioned room for parts of the day is also advised.

There's also a high pollen alert in effect. Anyone with seasonal allergies should be careful.
