Week in Review: Obama Visits Fairfax, Annandale Schools Win Big, Sports Round Up

A look back at some of our bigger stories of the week of Sept. 13-19

We're halfway through the month of September. The weather's changing, but the news keeps on coming.

President Barack Obama visited Fairfax County this week for a backyard discussion on the economy.

We debuted two new features to the site, including our weekly open houses in Annandale article which you can expect to see every Friday and Del. Kaye Kory's first weekly column with Annandale Patch was published.

There was plenty of school accolades and mentions this week. St. Ambrose School received a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence award. One hundred and twenty five students from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology were named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists, the most nominations of any school in Fairfax County. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors gave $1.3 million dollars to Fairfax County Public Schools to go toward the FCPS Priority Schools initiative.

Our first restaurant review from writer Monica Boland took us on a tour of authentic Northern Chinese at A & J restaurant right here in Annandale. We continued to introduce you to familiar local businesses and went inside the Tiny Kitchen with owner and Annandale resident Denise Medved. We told you why residents enjoy the Cue Club Cafe for more than just pool. Paul Michael's Hair Salon let us know what to expect from their upcoming appearance at D.C. Fashion Week.

The Fairfax County Police Department launched their new distracted driver campaign and we told you what to expect from the department as they move to the enforcement part of the campaign. Be sure to take the driver distractions survey on the FCPD website if you haven't already.

This past week in sports, we brought you what we hope to be a weekly feature here on Annandale Patch; a photo gallery from additional Annandale High School games. This weeek, it was the girls field hockey games against James Madison High School. The Atoms football team beat the South County High School Stallions 7-3 on Thursday night.

Our "Around Annandale" gallery this week came from the Annandale Farmers Market in Mason District Park and we introduced you to some of the vendors.

The police blotter updates from the Mason District Police Department, West Springfield District Police Department, and Franconia Police Department included details about the fatal crash on Sept. 7 on Little River Turnpike and Woodland Rd and a number of larcenies and vehicle thefts that happened in Annandale.
