Weekend Preview: Parades, Music and More

Here are some events going on in Annandale and in the county this weekend

Happy Friday, Annandale! Are you ready for the weekend? We are too. Welcome to your weekly weekend preview. Here's what's going on in our area on Saturday and Sunday.

Annandale High School Homecoming

Come out and line the streets for the Annandale High School's homecoming parade starts at 4 p.m. The parade route will begin on 4 Year Run and travel down Bristow Drive, Newcastle Drive, Erie Street, Heritage Drive and back to 4 Year Run. Stick around after the parade and show your support for the Atoms at the homecoming football game against West Springfield. Monster Mash Races and Children's Health Festival

If you've got a bike and a little chas to spare, join local non-profit Trails for Youth at their fifth annual Children's Health Festival and Monster Mash at Wakefield Park on Saturday, Oct. 16. The family-friendly event will feature a number of races throughout the day for both adults and kids. It costs $30 for adults to participate and $15 for children. There will be activities, raffles and more in addition to the races.

K-9 Krawl 5K Walk

Walk with the Fairfax County Police Department for a cause and help raise awareness about domestic violence and animal cruelty at their fourth annual K-9 Krawl 5K Walk. If you missed our preview article about it from yesterday, check it out here for details. The walk starts at 9 a.m. and is free and open to the public and their dogs.

Rock and Roll Flea Market and Guitar Show

If you're looking for a little music and shopping, the Rock and Roll Flea Market and Guitar Show at the Ernst Cultural Center Theater on Northern Virginia Community College's Annandale campus is the perfect way for you to spend your Sunday. There will be drinks and snacks available for purchase and patrons can browse a variety of memorabilia and accessories and vintage, new and used music gear such as speakers, amps, guitars and more. The event lasts from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free for those 12-years-old and younger, $4 for adults and $1 for seniors age 65 and up.

Jazz With Strings

Rock music not your style? Head back to the Ernst Cultural Center at 7:30 p.m. and enjoy an evening of jazz music at the annual "Jazz with Strings" concert on Sunday, Oct. 17. The Reunion Music Society Jazz Orchestra and the NOVA-Annandale Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Music Director Christopher Johnston will play a medley of Nelson Riddle's arrangements for jazz orchestra and big band. Some of the musicians featured during the concert include Herb Smith on saxophone, Michael Thomas on trumpet and Wes Biles on bass. with vocalists Julian Hipkins and Leila Sanie. The concert is $15 got adults. Seniors and students with ID pay $10 while children are admitted free.
