Concert - Newberry's Victorian Cornet Band

Newberry’s Victorian Cornet Band, founded in 2002, is a professional ensemble that performs wind band music composed between the end of the Civil War to the advent of the Sousa Band (1870-1890) on instruments of that period. This was a “Golden Age” of American bands, when every town, fire company, and industry had its own band. The Newberry Band recreates a touring professional band of the time, performing marches, dance music, arrangements of popular songs, and transcriptions of orchestral and operatic favorites that were so popular among late Victorian audiences. This era of music, in a sense, is also a lost era. The Sousa Band brought in a new style of instrumentation and composing that is still with us today in school and community bands. Newberry’s seeks to take audiences back in time to the actual sounds of the Gilded Age. The Peace Lutheran Concert will feature music that the band is recording by Thomas Coates, one of America’s best known composers in the 1880s. Selections include a medley of patriotic tunes, original marches, virtuosic solos on cornet and baritone, Coates’s famous funeral marches, and sprightly medley of Irish tunes.

Please invite your friends and family to join us for an enjoyable afternoon of music.
