Annandale Accountant Convicted of Tax Fraud

An Annandale man was convicted on July 12 of tax fraud and making false statements to federal agents.

Mohammad T. Al-Suqi, 54, was convicted of nineteen counts of aiding the preparation of a false income tax return, two counts of filing his own false income tax returns, and one count of making false statements to federal agents, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. 

From 2007 through 2010, Al-Suqi prepared and filed thousands of federal income tax returns that “contained materially false and fraudulent information” through two tax preparation companies he owned in Falls Church. As a result, the clients received large federal income tax refunds. Al-Suqi received between $100 and $250 for his services. In 2011, the release states Al-Suqi also prepared a tax return for an undercover IRS agent posing as a taxpayer and boasted of his popularity as a tax preparer who helps clients get large refunds.

Additionally, Al-Suqi claimed false expenses and credits on his 2008 and 2009 federal tax returns, the release states. He continued to prepare tax returns in 2013 using his wife’s electronic filing information since his filing number was revoked. He later lied about it when questioned. 

Al-Suqi was indicted by a federal grand jury on April 25. 

He will be sentenced on Oct. 4. He faces a maximum penalty of three years in prison on each of the tax counts and five years in prison on the false statements count.
