Capt. Lee: Injured Mason District Officer 'Has Long Recovery Road Ahead'

Lee updated residents on the officer's condition at Tuesday night's Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting at the Mason District Governmental Center in Annandale.

The 28-year-old police officer from the Mason District station of the Fairfax County Police Department who was injured in last Thursday's fatal head-on crash has a long road of recovery ahead, according to Capt. Gun Lee, commander of the Mason District Station.

Lee spoke about the officer at Tuesday night’s Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting at the Mason District Governmental Center in Annandale. After receiving the call that one of his officers was involved in a severe police cruiser accident, Lee said he felt very upset.

“As captain of this station, you all provided me with the authority, or trust, to take care of our troops. When I saw the severity of the injuries my officer had suffered, I could not believe it,” said Lee. “It felt like… imagine having a son that you deeply cared for, and he was just doing his job trying to help other folks in need, and out of the blue, you have this aggressive individual who decides to just drive in that matter and hit my officer… it was very upsetting.”

The officer, who Lee did not name out of respect for the officer and his family, is currently medically sedated and recovering from his second surgery, Lee said. “Although it was very tragic and we did lose a life, it could’ve been much worse. [The officer] was lucky.”

Lee asked all members of the community to keep sending well wishes to the officer as he recovers. As Patch reported on Monday, Fairfax Lodge 77, a local chapter of the National Fraternal Order of Police, has established a rehabilitation fund for the officer through PayPal. Donations can also be sent in by mail to 1921 Gallows Rd, Suite 750 Vienna, Va 22182. Checks can be made out to FOP Fairfax Lodge 77 memo: Mason Station officer donation, or dropped off at any Fairfax County district station.
