Fairfax County Violent Crime Sees 3.14 Percent Drop in 2013

County saw an overall drop in number of homicides and assaults in 2013 compared to 2012. Sex assaults were on the rise.

Fairfax County residents saw a drop in violent crimes last year compared to 2012, according to statistics released Wednesday by the Fairfax County Police Department.

The overall percentage drop was 3.14 percent in violent crime, defined as homicides, assaults, forcible and non-forcible sex offenses.

Although the county saw a drop in assaults, homicides and kidnappings, it saw an increase in sex offenses from 304 to 320. The highest number of sex offenses in 2013, 61, took place in the Franconia police district.

TOTAL: 8,248/7,989: -3.14 percent

Every police district in Fairfax County (click here to see a map of your police district) saw a drop in assaults except for the Mount Vernon District. The Mount Vernon District had the highest number of assaults in the county in both 2012 and 2013, and saw an increase from 1,527 assaults in 2012 to 1,662 in 2013.

The county saw eight homicides in 2013, half the number they saw in 2012 (16).
