A gas leak near Gallows Road shut down traffic on Columbia Pike in Annandale Tuesday afternoon.

A contractor was working on the road when they struck an underground pipe, causing the gas leak, said Reuben Rodriguez, director of corporate communications for Washington Gas.

Washington Gas repair trucks are currently on scene and working to fix the damaged pipe. The area is secure and residents are not in danger, according to Rodriguez.

Fairfax County police officers are currently on scene to help redirecting traffic. Rodriguez did not have an estimated time when the repairs would be complete or when Columbia Pike would reopen.

Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes until Columbia Pike reopens.
