The officer, whose name has not been released, was injured in a head-on collision car crash that killed 40-year-old Cicero I. Limberea Thursday morning after police responded to a 911 complaint in the 4800 block of Tapestry Drive around 12:30 a.m.

A previous report from the police stated a man fled the scene after police stopped by a home on Tapestry Drive in response to a domestic call. Caldwell said police spotted a man pulling away from the home in his vehicle. The man stopped and spoke to the officer, but drove away when the officer asked him to step out of the vehicle.

The officer was traveling westbound on Little River Turnpike when Limberea, who was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes, struck the police cruiser head-on. Limberea was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash blocked both directions of Route 236 Little River Turnpike and the I-495 ramps for several hours Thursday morning before rush hour.

Several community members have asked how they can help the officer and his family.

"[The community's] sentiments of concern are very much appreciated by the entire Mason District and the rest of the police department," said Caldwell.

Fairfax Lodge 77, a local chapter of the National Fraternal Order of Police, has established a rehabilitation fund for the officer through PayPal. A letter from Fairfax Lodge 77 President Mike Scanlon on the website states all funds will go toward assisting the officer in this recovery.

"This is the only account established with the blessing of the officer’s family and ONLY dedicated to this officer. We will not be soliciting over the phone or flyer. The funds collected in this account will be used to assist with offsetting the cost associated with the long-term rehabilitation that he and his family will have to go through," the letter states. "This is a dedicated officer and a dedicated community servant and family member. He is worthy of any assistance that can we can afford him."
