Officers Remove 22 Trucks From The Road During Surprise Safety Inspections

Truckers driving down Route 28 were directed to a local park for a surprise major safety inspection on Thursday. 

Officials removed 33 percent of the trucks inspected from the road. Out of the 61 vehicles inspected, 22 were placed out of service, and those who were not able to make repairs had to have their vehicles towed. 

The inspections on Route 28 were part of a massive effort by Fairfax County Police, in addition to officials and law enforcement from all over Northern Virginia, including the Town of Herndon, State Police, the Department of Motor Vehicles and DOD police from Fort Belvoir. While officials conduct these types of inspections at least a few times a year, this week was part of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) RoadCheck 2011 national effort, an annual event.

Motor Carrier Safety Officers inspected several aspects of the trucks, Police said, including lighting and steering components, barkes and proper licenses. 

The MCS squad is a team of eight officers -- four full-time and four part-time -- who work under Fairfax's Operational Support Bureau’s Traffic Unit.
