Cold Temps Cause Water Main Break in Annandale Monday Night

Fairfax County police have blocked off two eastbound lanes due to the break.

Update: Repairs on the water main break were completed around 8:20 a.m. Tuesday morning.

--

A water main break in Annandale is affecting homes near the Terrace Townhomes community and creating minor traffic delays Monday night.

Fairfax Water crews are currently on scene. Fairfax County police have two of the eastbound lanes blocked between Conwell Drive and Brentleigh Court.

The break was reported around 8:30 p.m., according Jeanne Bailey, spokesperson for Fairfax Water.

Bailey said the cold temperatures appears to be the cause of the break, but crews will know more once they begin repairs.

"When the water temperature gets this cold and the ground starts to contract, those two factors cause these sorts of breaks," said Bailey.

It's unclear how many homes are affected and how long the repairs will take, Bailey said, as there are other main breaks throughout the county this evening in the queue for repair.

Fairfax Water has requested Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews place salt and sand down to keep the water from freezing and creating icy conditions on the Little River Turnpike until repairs are finished.

Motorists should use alternate routes if possible, but traffic is being diverted to the private service road in order to allow eastbound traffic on Little River Turnpike to pass.
