County Zoning Board Votes to Let Iraq Vet Keep Falls Church Tree House

Officials originally said the house violated a county ordinance

Sean Grapin and his brother will be able to keep the tree house their father, Mark Grapin, built for them for at least the next five years.

On Wednesday, the Fairfax County Board of Zoning Appeals voted to unanimously approve a variance that will allow the 58-square-foot tree house to stay at the Grapin's home.

Grapin, an officer in the United States Army and Iraq war veteran, built the tree house earlier this year. On Sept. 21, zoning officials argued the tree house violated a county zoning ordinance and said the tree house had to be removed. The board voted 4-3 in favor of not approving a variance to keep the tree house. The decision attracted local and international attention and sparked an online petition in support of the tree house.
