Springfield Still an Option for New FBI Headquarters

Moving the FBI headquarters from downtown D.C. to Fairfax County is a possibility, as the County has offered its optimal site, the Springfield warehouse, for consideration by the General Services Administration.

There's still a chance the FBI may park its headquarters in our backyard. The Springfield area is still being considered in the search for new location for the agency.

Lee District Supervisor Jeff McKay recently told Patch that the General Services Administration (GSA) is currently still reviewing responses from their request for information (RFI).

"No decisions have been made yet. We know they're still reviewing responses, and I would hope they would notify us about the location by the end of the summer," he said.

In late 2011, the Government Accountability Office determined that the current FBI headquarters was in need of so many repairs that the government's best option was to move the bureau into a new building, according to the Washington Business Journal.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors has offered the Springfield warehouse for consideration for the new FBI headquarters location. Gov. Bob McDonnell and Congressman Jim Moran (D-11th) have also endorsed Springfield as the best location.

Some guidelines that are being used to decide on the new location include:

  • No more than 2 miles from a metro station
  • No more than 2.5 miles from the Beltway
  • Between 40-55 acres

Previously, McKay has said Springfield is the best location out of those being considered because it's near the Franconia-Springfield Metro Station and only a Virginia Express Rail ride away from Quantico.

The above guidelines can change based on what the House and GSA say as this process progresses. The next step in the search for the relocated headquarters will be to issue a request for proposal (RFP).
