Annandale Athletic Booster Club 5K Event Kicks Off Tomorrow

The annual event will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Annandale High School

Break out your running shoes, folks: 's Athletic Booster Club will host their "" tomorrow, Saturday, May 21.

The annual walk, which has been around since the late 80s, starts at 8:30 a.m. at Four Year Run by the track at AHS. The course will roll through the neighborhood and end on the track and spectators who wish to watch, but not run, can stand along the track and show their support. According to Jenn Montes de Oca with the Atoms 5K Planning Committee, 104 people have already pre-registered and around 75 more are expected to register on Saturday.

Funds from the event benefit all AHS athletic programs and college scholarships. Almost 50 local sponsors also help make the event possible such as , , , Kilroy's, , , , , Windows Plus, Steven's Construction, D&P Printing, and  , among others.

For those looking to participate but have not registered can sign up on Saturday. The entry fee is $22 for adults and $15 for students under 18 and AHS faculty. All participants receive a race T-shirt and will have their names submitted to win prizes from a raffle. Raffle prizes include gift certificates from many of the local sponsors.

In addition to the walk, the Marching Atoms will perform at 8:30 a.m. and there will also be a community health fair in the parking loty the track until 12 p.m. There will be fitness screenings and health information in both English and Spanish. Health fair participants include INOVA, Family Services, Recreation Services (James Lee Teen Center), Amerigroup Medicare, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), all of the sports groups from the high school, and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).
