Fairfax Superintendent Karen Garza Sworn In

The Fairfax County Schools system’s new superintendent Karen Garza was sworn in Thursday afternoon. 

“I can’t tell you how honored and thrilled and humbled I am to have this opportunity,” Garza said. “I’m ready to work.”

Garza will be the first woman superintendent of the Fairfax County School system. The former superintendent of the Lubbock Independent School District in Texas was appointed by the school board in May.

Fairfax County Circuit Court Judge Jan Brodie administered the swearing-in ceremony.

“From what I’ve read about your new superintendent, I have no doubt that she is going to lead and serve you well,” Brodie said.

Garza was also greeted by Ilryong Moon, chairman of the school board.

“We have the best person to come in on July 1 to help our school district move forward. As you know this is an historic occasion,” Moon said. “We are looking forward to her leadership.”
