FCPS Names Dan Parris Interim Deputy Superintendent

Parris, who is the Assistant Superintendent of Cluster 3 which includes Annandale-area schools, will temporarily retiring Deputy Superintendent Richard Moniuszko.

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has named an interim deputy superintendent to temporarily replace Deputy Superintendent Richard Moniuszko next year.

Assistant Superintendent of Cluster 3 Dan Parris will temporarily fill the role until a permanent replacement is hired, according to a news release from FCPS. Moniuszko is retiring at the end of December and has accepted a position in the College of Education and Human Development at George Mason University in Fairfax.

Parris will start his new position on Jan. 1, 2014.

As the superintendent for cluster 3, Parris oversees schools in the Annandale High School, Woodson High School and Stuart High School pyramids.

Parris is no stranger to FCPS. He received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Tennessee and earned his master’s in educational administration from Virginia Tech. In 1982, he started at FCPS as a classroom teacher at Stephen Foster and Sandburg Middle Schools, teaching U.S. history, English, and physical education. Prior to accepting the superintendent position in 2010, he was the principal of Rocky Run Middle School from 2003 until 2010. He also previously served as assistant principal at Holmes Middle School and Stone Middle School.

Parris initially intended to retire at the end of this year, but chose to remain and assistant Karen Garza, the new superintendent, in her transition, according to the Washington Post.

Parris now plans to retire June 30, 2014.
