Jump Into Mulch Madness at Annandale High School

Annual fundraiser benefits safe grad night celebration

While some in the area are recovering from March Madness, the Parent Teacher Student Association is smack in the middle of its’ annual Mulch Madness sale.

Each year, the AHS PTSA sells and delivers mulch as a fundraiser to support the school’s All Night Graduation Celebration. The sale is underway now and ends Monday, Apr. 11.

“We sell mulch simply because it’s something everyone needs and buys anyway,” said Laurie McCann, this year’s PTSA mulch sale coordinator.  Other groups in the area also sell mulch, and sales are a bit slower this year, according to McCann. The sale typically generates between $7,500 and $8,000 for the grad night program and the PTSA hopes to match or beat that amount this year.

The dark brown, shredded, hardwood mulch sells for $5.00 for a three cu. ft. bag including delivery on Saturday, Apr. 30. A 15 bag minimum applies for deliveries across the AHS school district, as well as Ravensworth and Wakefield Chapel. Buyers can also pick up bags for $4.50 each at AHS on Saturday, Apr. 30, between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. The PTSA generates $2.00 for the grad night program from every bag sold.

The mulch sale and Phantom Ball, an imaginary gala, are both “critical to the success of the grad night event,” said McCann. The Annandale High School All Night Graduation Celebration is a supervised, alcohol and drug- free event for graduating seniors that takes place from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. on graduation night, Jun. 16.

McCann and her husband Mike coordinated this year’s sale along with fellow parent Brian George who managed the delivery logistics. While the lacrosse team has been responsible for deliveries in past years, a scheduling conflict led to McCann recruiting help from the baseball team for this year’s fundraiser.

Anyone interested in purchasing mulch can visit the AHS PTSA website for more details on Online Mulch Order and Payment or download the Mulch Order Form and mail it with their check to the PTSA. Online orders require credit cards and all orders must be paid in advance.
